The travelling theatre, a
cultural voyage
Here is an invitation to explore three centuries of theatrical fantasy,
including Molière's 17th century travelling theatre, Harlequin and Pierrot with
Comedia dell'Arte masks from the Age of Enlightenment, to the travelling
theatres of the 19th and 20th centuries, all on display at the Artenay Museum.
Panoramas, backcloths, costume wardrobes, Louis XV dresses and make up boxes
bear witness to the creation of imaginary and poetic universes, to the birth of
the acting profession and to the literature of the theatre as well as the
theatrical heritage of the various French provinces.
It also retraces the significant events in the history of the Beauce, and its
structural development from pre-history to recent times, through displays of
artefacts linked to local crafts and agriculture.
