THE LOIRET AND ITS WINES:
Orléans vineyard route:

Click on the map

In the Val de Loire, between the Loire and Sologne………

Around 510 A.D., Monks living on the banks of the Loire were the first people to grow wine in the region.

Down through the centuries, being so proud of their wine, the Orléanais became wealthy from trading in this gentle brew. The fought hard against the royal authorities to keep control of the quality and to prevent counterfeiting, and also ensuring that no fertilisers are used and only good Pinot blanc or Pinot rouge grape varieties are cultivated. In 1610, the Orléanais winegrowing area was the most populated in the world.
Following on from the Kings Philippe 1st, Louis XIth, Charles VIIth and Joan of Arc, you too can become an Orléans wine taster. With the winegrowers of the third millennium, you will find grape varieties with hundreds of years of history and you will delight in these very pleasant, fruity and light Loire wines.

10 km from Orléans, between the Loire and Sologne, the Orléans vineyard extends over the villages of Cléry Saint-André, Mareau-aux-Prés, Mézières-le-Cléry and Saint-Hilaire St-Mesmin. The local winegrowers have found the way of getting the very best from this marriage of different grape varieties and different soil types.

Orléans White:

IProduced from the noble Chardonnay grape, source of the very finest French wines, it confers a very subtle nose of white blossom and toffee to this wine, developing into an ample and generous palate and a lingering fruity finish. Served at a temperature of 8° C, this wine can be drunk as an aperitif and is the perfect accompaniment for fish and seafood dishes as well as asparagus and raw vegetable starters.

Orléans Red:

Produced from a blend of Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir grapes, the Orléans rouge offers a nose brimful of red fruits, a rounded, fruity palate and a refreshing light and free-flowing finish. Served at a temperature between 12° and 14° C it is an ideal complement to fish dishes in sauce, red and white meat, as well as delicatessen products, grilled meats or poultry. A few years laying down in the good cellar will provide an excellent return on your patience (5 years maximum).

Orléans Rosé :

Produced with Pinot Meunier grapes, this Summer wine par excellence will be the ideal companion for your grilled dishes and cold buffets. It will charm you all year round as a complement to your starters, exotic dishes and couscous. Its ideal serving temperature is between 6 and 8° C.

Orléans-Cléry :

Produced with Cabernet grapes and solely with Cabernet grapes, this wine always presents a deep, intense structure and a powerful, spicy nose devloping into an ample palate with a lively character. It is a wine for laying down. The best years will develop a delicious smoothness after about 10 years in the cellar. Served between 18 and 20° C, this wine will be a delight with game birds or venison and red meats and will more than match the pleasures of your cheese board.
